mo & dawn: the remix project: Acid Jazz Lounge
Acid jazz (from allmusic.com) The music played by a generation raised on jazz as well as funk and hip-hop, Acid Jazz used elements of all three; its existence as a percussion-heavy, primarily live music placed it closer to jazz and Afro-Cuban than any other dance style, but its insistence on keeping the groove allied it with funk, hip-hop, and dance music…A variety of acid jazz artists emerged during the late '80s and early '90s: live bands such as Stereo MC's, James Taylor Quartet, the Brand New Heavies, Groove Collective, Galliano, and Jamiroquai, as well as studio projects like Palm Skin Productions, Mondo Grosso, Outside, and United Future Organization.
mo & dawn: the acid jazz lounge is quite simply a lounge style show without all of the cheddar….cheese that is. It’s an opportunity to play some classic jazz, funk, soul and R&B with an approach that fits a 21st Century aesthetic. We take songs (including many of our own) and create original arrangements; changing harmonies and grooves to make it uniquely mo & dawn. To keep our musical sanity, we only play songs that we like, NOT what “drunk guy at the bar trying to impress his friend/girl/client/etc” wants to hear. We respect all musicians and the various means of expression but “covers and requests” are definitely not our bag!
So with the acid jazz lounge you might hear Duke Ellington, Prince, Vargas Swing, Erica Badu, Jobim, Commodores, Urban Jazz Naturals, Ray Charles, Wayne Shorter, the remix project, Bill Withers, Edie Brickell, Blood, Sweat & Tears and many more surprises. From intimate “acoustic” interpretations to full house remixes you just never know what we will pull out.
mo & dawn: the acid jazz lounge, is our side project that we only do locally in St. Louis. we still focus most of our recording and creative energies on the remix project. Our regular acid jazz venues include Chaser's and Villa Antonio Winery.
We combine the two shows at certain venues as well, beginning the night a bit more chill, and ending with our original funk, jazz-house and electronica. Locations for combo shows include venues like Brandt's in the University City Loop and Mount Pleasant Winery.
Most of our fan friends appreciate all of what we do, but our fan base covers a wide demographic, so we dig it that people like us for different reasons.
